There is no question that superheroes movies have been trendy for the past decade, and it seems like that is not going to stop anytime soon, even though some famous actors, like Chris Evans, are done with their contracts at Marvel. However, the DCEU is just getting started, the MCU is still going strong, and other studios want to get in on the action. Let’s dive into the productions that might hit the big screen soon.
1. Batgirl – In the works
This is a long-awaited project that is just pulling off the ground. Joss Whedon was initially part of it, but he had to back out. “Batgirl is such an exciting project... that it took me months to realize I really didn't have a story." Some fans want Petty Jenkin’s to take over this project after how wonderfully she handled Wonder Woman, or perhaps, another woman in the lead could work as well.
2. Black Widow – Still just a rumor
The MCU brought Black Widow to the screen a long time ago, but it’s surprising that they have yet to work in her solo movie. She has an incredible backstory as a Russian spy who then became an agent for S.H.I.E.L.D., so that would make a fantastic film. At this point, Marvel has allegedly hired someone to write the script, but no confirmation has been issued yet.
3. Cyborg – In production
Cyborg might not have seemed that important in last year’s Justice League, but DC has decided to make a solo movie about him; even actor Ray Fisher confirmed that something was coming in 2020. However, there have no updates or information about the development of the film, but Joe Morton, who plays his father, has said that it will be an origin story.
4. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – Definitely; maybe
Earlier this year, this movie was a sure thing, and James Gunn was actively updating fans about the productions of the third part. However, Gunn was fired from Disney after some political tweets made almost ten years ago caused a stir on Twitter. Due to the pressure from the public, Chairman Alan Horn released a statement.
“The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him.” Fans have been left in the lurge regarding this projects, and we were so looking forward to the possible appearance of Adam Warlock.
5. Doctor Strange 2 – There is a chance
His solo movie might not have been the most popular entry in the MCU, though we all loved it, his involvement in Infinity War cemented the character as a huge part of this saga. Sadly, we are still waiting for news about a possible sequel with this warlock, though the screenwriters of the first one have many ideas for the next film.
6. Lobo – They are making it
Writer Jason Fuchs, known for Wonder Woman, has written the script of the interstellar bandit, and it might change the landscape of the DCEU. However, there have been some bumps in the road for this film. Warner Bros. is not happy that the story requires such a huge budget, so there are still many negotiations that need to take place.
7. Justice League Dark – YES!
This is another production that has been a bit rocky, but the idea is still there. More than a year ago, Guillermo del Toro was handling it, but he suddenly pulled out, though Warner Bros. immediately started searching for another director. They found Doug Liman, and he had to leave as well, but they have a new writer that has been polishing the script to perfection.
8. Fantastic Four – There is a slight chance
The Fantastic Four was perhaps Stan Lee’s favorite work, and Marvel’s most recognized comic books, but in terms of movies, it has not done well. However, that has not stopped from looking at these superheroes with all their potential. Back during Infinity War promotions, fans thought that the use of the word “Fantastic” was an indicator, but to no avail. We will have to wait for more details.
9. Wonder Woman 2 – Unquestionably
It came as no surprise that a movie centered on a female superhero was so successful due to the current political climate in the world, so the sequel was to be expected. Patty Jenkins will be directing once again, and the supervillain will be Cheetah, played by Kristen Wiig. There have not been many details about the plot, except that it might take place during the Cold War.
10. Birds of Prey – It is going to happen
DCEU is putting all their eggs in Batgirl’s basket, as they have a movie about Birds of Prey in the works. Christina Hodson has been hired to write the screenplay of the team made up of Batgirl, Black Canary, and Huntress. Margot Robbie has been rumored to return as Harley Quinn in this film, but there is not much else to report about it.
11. X-23 – Still not confirmed
Everyone loved X-23 in Logan, and the end of the movie is the perfect set up for a spin-off about Laura, who might take over the mantle of Wolverine. James Mangold is said to be working on the script for Fox, but since the Disney-Fox deal, things are not yet confirmed. We are still hopeful that Kevin Feige and Disney will consider this instead of recasting the role of Wolverine.
12. The Batman – In production
After the Justice League critics, people were worried that The Batman would not continue, but director Matt Reeves said that the motion picture was moving along. After appearing in mostly team-up movies, we are finally getting a solo film for the DCEU’s Batman, but it might not feature Ben Affleck because he is still not sure about continuing with the role.
13. Flashpoint – In the works
The DCEU is moving along with the plans for solo movies, and The Flash is not far behind, but things might not be what you expect. Flashpoint changed things up in the timeline for our heroes because Barry traveled through time, so the studio might use this opportunity to change things that they did not like about the other films.
14. Man of Steel 2 – No news yet
Justice League revived Superman like we were all expecting, so there are rumors about a possible sequel to Henry Cavill’s performance. Mark Miller and Matthew Vaughn are allegedly talking about what the next installment would show, and it seems that Warner Bros. likes the idea. However, there has been no confirmation, but it seems that Cavill might be extending his contract with the studio.
15. Spider-Man 2 – This is a sure thing
If the disappearance of Peter Parker in Infinity War made you cry, don’t worry because Tom Holland will be reprising his role in Spider-Man: Far From Home. After the success of the first film, this comes as no surprise, but we do not know much about the plot yet, except that it will take place after the events of Avengers 4.
16. X-Force – Yes
After another great Deadpool movie released this year, the studio wants the X-Force to hit the big screen, and it will feature Cable and Domino as well. Zazie Beetz, who plays Domino, has a three-film contract, and although some motion pictures are still up in the air after the Disney/Fox deal, this one will definitely happen.
17. Thor 4 – Maybe
Thor: Ragnarok was amazing, but Chris Hemsworth’s contract with Marvel expires after Avengers 4, so a fourth solo movie might not happen. Chris and director Taika Waititi talked about what would happen in a fourth film, but most future projects depend on what happens in the second part of Infinity War, so we will have to wait.
18. New Gods – They are working on it
No one expecting this film to happen, but this story about a mythological land is going to hit the big screen. It features a paradise land, like Heaven, called New Genesis, which is ruled by Izaya the Highfather, and there is also a place like Hell called Apokolips, which is ruled by Lord Darkseid. Ava DuVernay is directing while Kario Salem was recently hired to write the script.
19. Green Lantern Corps – It is happening
The previous Green Lantern movie was awful, but fans are still waiting for a better adaptation of this superhero. In Green Lantern Corps, there are two versions of Green Lantern, and Warner Bros. revealed that Hal Jordan and John Stewart will be starring. Some people were worried that the recent box office flops of the DCEU might stop this project, but it will happen.
20. Nightwatch – No news yet
After the success of Venom, it is not surprising that Sony Picture is turning towards darker characters to make their movies. This antihero robs a dying superhero, taking his suit, and, in an unexpected twist, finds out that it was him in the future. Allegedly, Cheo Hodari Coker, from Luke Cage, is writing the script, and Spike Lee is going to direct, but anything can happen at this point.
21. Booster Gold – In production
This project was surprising for most, as Booster Gold’s story is more cheerful than anything DC has been doing lately. Zack Stentz is writing the script, and creator Greg Berlanti confirmed the movies was still in the works earlier this year. This might be the Deadpool of DC, since this character is a parody of superheroes and celebrities, and we are very much looking forward to it.
22. Gambit – It will be on the big screen
Despite being in the works for a long time, it seems that this story is finally taking off, and Channing Tatum as Remy LeBeau. This character has appeared in several X-Men movies such as X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but it’s about time he got his own film. There have been a few setbacks, though, as a couple of directors have pulled, but the studio is working on it.
23. The Question – Maybe
This might just be wishful thinking, but there are rumors that DC plans to make a film about The Question. Arrowverse’s Marc Guggenheim wanted the character for Arrow, but DC said no because they had plans, so there is still hope. However, this might not be a solo project, Vic Sage could appear in a team film or have a cameo in another.
24. Nightwing – Yes
Director Chris Mckay said that the script is almost done, and the story will be about Dick Grayson, the former Robin. However, they are still working on all the details because they do not want the project to flop like other DCEU films. There is no word on casting, but we are sure that it is going to be amazing once it’s done. Who could portray the role?
What did you think of the rumored and confirmed movies coming up? It looks like we are going to spend the rest of our lives watching superheroes on the big screen, and we love it! I
